Richard M. Hammer, age 70, joined the heavenly angels on January 26, 2025, following a brief illness. Rich was born in Embudo, NM on Sept 11, 1954 and raised in Ranchos de Taos, NM. He graduated Taos High in 1972. His parents, Charlie and Antonia Hammer had nine children and Rich was the eldest son. In 1977, Rich began his aviation career by serving in the US Air Force, 21 years, as heavy aircraft mechanic, quality assurance inspector, production Supervisor and Squadron Safety liaison and Assistant Attaché at US Embassies. While in the Air Force, Rich earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. After retiring from the Air Force, Rich worked for American Eagle Airlines as a Technical Liaison for five years in Texas. From there, he spent six years with Dean Baldwin Painting as Chief Inspector for the repair station in Roswell, NM. Rich wrapped up his career at the Albuquerque FSDO (Flight Standards District Offices) as FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Safety Team Program Manager and retired mid-year 2023. Rich loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had over 200K miles on his Road King and another 35K on the Ultra. He enjoyed many road trips over the last decade with his wife, Gail. Rich served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children (CASA), for many years. Rich, often called, "Hammer", loved fishing, northern NM mountains, rivers and lakes, yard work, his chickens and all his pets. Rich loved his immediate and extended families, his neighbors, and always enjoyed time with friends. All who had the privilege of knowing him, know his kindness and generous approach to life and we've all experienced first-hand, his heart of gold. As one friend put it - Rich was one of the "good guys". May all who read this obituary, keep Rich's compassion for others and animals in your heart, and share that kindness with others. Rich is survived by his loving wife, Gail, and her son, Michael, his daughter, Crista, his son, Adam, grandson, Jolie, his sisters; Conchita, Anabel and Giovanna, and brothers; Gary, Elmer and Steve. Rich was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Diana and Barbara. A Celebration of Life for Rich will be held Saturday, March 8th, beginning at 10 am at Calvary Taos Church at 723 Camino del Medio, Taos, followed by a reception at Llano Quemado Community Center, located at 6 Miranda Canyon Road, Ranchos de Taos, NM, 87557.
