Preston Robert Cox was born on April 23, 1944 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Preston Wright Cox and Katherine Steiner Cox and passed away unexpectedly on February 13, 2023. As the son of the Aide to the United Nation Controller, Preston spent many of his early years in the Middle East and often shared stories of his experiences overseas. He attended Manhasset Senior High School and studied at Texas Christian University. In 1969, he married Sandra Hersey and soon after moved to Northern New Mexico. In Santa Fe, Preston worked in the accounting and tax business and in 1983, the couple bought Embudo Station and turned it into a thriving restaurant and brewpub on the banks of the Rio Grande. Preston once said, “The river will change you. If you listen, you will have a lot to learn.” Sandy died on February 2, 2023 and sadly, eleven days later, Preston also passed away at home. He is survived by his sister- and brother-in-law Ann and Raymond Wood, and his sister-in-law Betty Hersey. His nieces and a nephew include the families of Wendy Wood Hempen and husband Rob, Stacy Wood Hempen and husband Todd, Alison Hersey, Jenny Hersey and Chris and Susan Hersey, 4 grand nephews and cousin Charles Hersey who lives in Embudo. A memorial service will be held for both Sandy and Preston at Embudo Station at a later date.
