Lawrence Jaramillo resident of Questa (El Rito), age 75 passed away at his home on September 26th. He is preceded in death by son Brad Jaramillo; his father Hernando Jaramillo; in-laws Rufino and Cordelia Garcia; three nieces Bernadine Smith, Naomi Garcia Beall and Brenda Garcia; nephews Cruz Chavez II, Tony Montgomery, and great-nephew Andres Chavez. Also, in-laws Juan Garcia, Isaac Garcia, , sisters-in-law Mary Montgomery, Dorothy Garcia, Grace Valdez (Benito) and Esther Garcia; and Marshall Bailon a close family friend.
He is survived by his mother Mercedes Jaramillo; his wife Evangeline Jaramillo; son Brent Jaramillo, daughters Emily Jaramillo and Lenora Jaramillo; grandchildren James Silversmith and Andrew Jaramillo; siblings Marilyn Jaramillo, Sandra (Ben Bowles) Jaramillo, Elma (Cruz) Chavez, Bob (Martha) Jaramillo, Bernie (Geri) Jaramillo, Edwin (Arla) Jaramillo and Vince Jaramillo; brother-in-law Eugene Garcia and sister-in-law Virginia Garcia; and survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Charles Cisneros Post VFW 9516. He was a faithful servant to the Knights of Columbus for 27 years. He was a founding member of the Santiago Assembly, Grand Knight, and he also served as district deputy of Northern Central Region.
When Lawrence was raising his children, he was involved in youth sports, he always was engaged in the community and played a vital role in any organization. Most importantly, he had a very strong work ethic that rubbed off on his family. After retirement from Chevron Mine for more than 35 years, Lawrence went to UNM-Taos and transitioned to UNM Main Campus. He received a bachelor’s degree at University of New Mexico in psychology in May 2020, and he began a second career as a substance abuse counselor at Rio Grande Alcohol Treatment Program.
His passions were fishing, farming, yardwork and being a grandfather. He enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews. He had a strong faith in God that he shared at St. Anthony’s and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Cerro.
Rosary will be recited on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 6:30pm at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Questa. Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 12pm at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Questa with burial to follow at the Cerro Cemetery.
