It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Debra Michelle Wright, a beloved Mother, sister, nurse, and friend. Debra left this world peacefully on April 20, 2025, on Easter Sunday, the day of resurrection—surrounded by love and the spirit of new beginnings. Born on January 2, 1962, in San Francisco, Debra’s journey was one of unwavering dedication to her family, her community, and the world around her. Her greatest joy and proudest accomplishments in life were her three sons—Joe, Donevan, and Ysidro. Each day, she poured herself into creating a childhood for them filled with love, laughter, and the deep sense of belonging that only a mother’s love can provide. Her devotion to them was immeasurable, and in turn, they were her greatest treasures. She achieved her lifelong goal of raising her sons to be independent and a self-sufficient dream that came to fruition as she had the joy of watching each of them earn their college degrees before her passing.
Debra’s heart was as vast as her talents. She dedicated her professional life to serving others, particularly the underserved Native American community. For many years, she worked as a compassionate Labor & Delivery nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, NM, and later with the Indian Health Service in Santa Fe, NM. During her time there, she helped bring over a thousand new lives into this world. Her presence in the delivery room was one of warmth and care, and she will be remembered by many for the comfort she gave to mothers in their most vulnerable moments. She later served as a school nurse at Enos Garcia Elementary in Taos, NM, always going above and beyond to ensure the well-being of her students. In addition to her work in healthcare, Debra was deeply involved in her artistic community. A gifted creator, she was known for her handmade Native American jewelry, her intricate clothing-making, and for crafting the headpiece for the First Gathering of Nations. Debra’s hands, always busy with a project, helped to preserve and celebrate the cultural beauty and traditions of her heritage. A proud member of the Laguna Pueblo, Debra's spirituality and connection to the earth were central to her life. She spent many hours in her garden, cultivating the beauty of nature, while also finding solace in the quiet moments spent with her cats in her peaceful backyard. She also had a deep love for the natural healing powers of New Mexico’s hot springs, which provided her with both physical relief and spiritual renewal.
Debra’s love extended beyond her immediate family. She is survived by her three sons, her close brothers Jason and JP Wright, and her extended family from Laguna Pueblo. Her legacy of love, service, and community will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A true embodiment of grace, kindness, and devotion, Debra leaves behind a world that is richer for having had her in it. Her gentle spirit, fierce love for her children, and unwavering commitment to others will forever be remembered.
Rest in peace, Debra. You have done your work here, and now you have found peace. Your journey continues, surrounded by the love you gave so freely.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coalition To Stop Violence Against Native Women, a cause that was close to her heart.
