Carole Irene (Carilene) Newby transitioned from this life on January 15th, 2023. She went according to her wishes, in her own home in El Prado, NM and passed peacefully in her sleep.
She was 80 years old. She is survived by her sisters Jerilee Camille Newby and Lorraine Eleanor (Kit) Neagle, and her nieces Janis Christine Meadows and Jenni Cathleen Rotmans. Born to William B Newby and Beatrice Longuevan Newby in Los Angeles, California and raised in Hemet.
Carilene obtained her degree in education from San Diego State College in 1965. She went on to teach elementary school grades for 20 years. During the summers, she traveled the world as a true adventurer, going to places such as the Great Wall of China, Nepal, Bali, Peru and multiple countries throughout Europe. She was married in 1974 to Richard Carey and divorced amicably 9 years later. In the early 1990s she left her home in Southern California and moved to El Prado, NM.
Carilene was an avid nature enthusiast and loved hiking in wilderness areas with her dog around the country. She was also a highly creative soul, pursuing among other interests Sufi dancing, musical composition, singing with her high soprano voice and poetry. A joyful and very spiritual person, Carilene will be greatly missed by her family and the community of friends with whom she built relationships for over 30 years.
As per her own wishes, a formal memorial service will not be held. The family will be instead conducting a video call across multiple states to commemorate and celebrate the beautiful life that she led.
The family of Carole Irene (Carilene) Newby has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos. 866-657-4019 www.devargastaos.com
